Originally from the Dutch speaking part of Belgium, we learned French, English and German in school. Later on, I loved the songs of an Italian singer-songwriter and learned Italian from a book. After that I gave Spanish I try, but never got fluent in it. For some reason the sound of it does not appeal to me.

I later tried to learn some Spanish before visiting a friend in Spain, Russian for Cyrillic alphabet before visiting the former Soviet Union, Mandarin quick course at night school, then Japanese when living there. No proficiency in any.

Last year I tried the Cyrillic alphabet because there are so many Russian documentaries on the Tube. I wanted to at least be able to read their names. But I think my head is full LOL. You certainly did not chose the easiest languages ! I knew a woman in Belgium who studied Mandarin for 5 years and said she only got the basics. I can read a bit of Greek but it still stays Greek to me - I don't understand what I am reading.

I have a criminal lawyer friend who taught herself Arabic when sent to Gaza by the UN.

I thank God for google translate ! got quite a few of Arabic cooking shows and handicraft Tubes. They are great at both. A friend dated an Arabic man for a while and said that Arabic is not hard at all... some people are just geniuses.
